Imagine you are at the free throw line at a away game with one second left on the clock, your team is down one point, and you are at the free throw line shooting two shots. This time of situation happens quite often in the game of basketball. The pressure bar is raised through the roof because if you make them your team and school will exalt you. On there other hand if you miss them, they will be upset even if they never tell you to your face. You must be wondering by now "well how do I make this shot"? My answer is simple. Shoot the shot the same way you would shoot a regular free throw with nobody in the gym but you. There are 4 important steps to shooting free throws that I believe will help increase your percentage at the line.
#1: Relax- Never panic when it is time to shoot free throws. This is the only part of the game where you get to shoot a open shot without the defender trying to stop you. Take a deep breath and try to calm your nerves.
#2: Concentrate- This may sound easy to do but if the game is intense this can be very difficult. You have to block out the sound and maybe even the fans in the stand trying to distract you. Once you block out all distractions you are ready to shoot.
#3: Develop a Rhythm- Take a couple of dribbles or whatever you need to do to get a comfortable feel of the ball. This step correlates with #1 but always take a couple dribbles to loosen yourself up. Also make sure you bend your knees right before you are about to shoot.
#4: Shoot the Shot- Finally, shoot the shot. Remember to have your elbow in a "L" shape on your shooting arm. Bend your knees, release, and follow through.
